Embrace Our Roots

Our roots run deep, our voices rise together. Mexican American means community, resistance, and never backing down.
This year, celebrating las Fiestas Patrias hit different.

For many of us in the Mexican community, these days are more than a celebration of independence—they are a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and why our existence is an act of resistance. With the recent ICE raids targeting our communities, we are reminded that the fight for dignity and respect is far from over. But we also know this: no matter what policies they pass, no matter how many doors they knock on, they cannot erase who we are.

We are Mexican. We are American. We are the children and grandchildren of immigrants. We are the stories of sacrifice, of language carried across borders, of recipes passed down by abuelas, of music that plays at every family gathering. We are the laborers who built cities and picked fields. We are the students breaking generational cycles. We are the activists, the artists, the teachers, and the healers.

We fly our flags. We speak Spanish without apology. We tell our stories. We teach our children about our roots—not just as a source of pride, but as a foundation of power.

To embrace your roots is to say:
"You will not control how I express my identity."
"My history cannot be deported, and my voice cannot be silenced."
"You will not shame me for my culture."

This 15 and 16 de septiembre, we celebrate not just our independence from colonial rule, but our resistance against the forces that try to divide and dehumanize us. We celebrate the pride that lives in our food, our music, our language, and our love for our families. That pride is louder than fear—and it will not go away.

¡Viva México! ¡Viva nuestra gente!
