¿Porqué celebró la independencia de Mexico? Why do I celebrate Mexico’s independence?
¿Que tiene significante en mi vida? What importance does it have in my life?
When we hear about Mexico, we often listen to the bad things and we don’t always listen or look for the good things that Mexico has to offer. We often associate Mexico with cartels and corrupt government officials but we don’t see the culture that is known for. When I think about Mexico, I think about the homeland of grandparents, the birthplace of my parents, the reason I grew up to love soccer, telenovelas, the food and many more things.
I didn’t grew up knowing this about myself. There are a few memories of me as a child celebrating any festivities of my Mexican heritage. There was once back in elementary school as part of 5 de mayo we were asked to dance la raspa. I don’t remember much of my traditions maybe the ones in Christmas when we gather to do posadas but that’s it. Later in school there wasn’t much we covered on Mexico or Mexican Americans in our history classes other than Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers but that was nothing. I was limited to my heritage and little that I expose to I wasn’t interested in. However, when I went to college I started to find out more about myself and my family’s history.
I am celebrating because it’s part of who I am. Even though I am not Mexican by birth but it’s what in your heart that counts. You don’t need to be born in that country to know that you’re from there. I am celebrating because I want to show my son where his family comes from, I want to him to know the history and the background of each struggle of his ancestors. There is a lot to learn from our culture and I want the chance to share this with my own family.
VIVA MEXICO!!!
